HSSC Regatta Rally 2009

Saturday 4 July

Osborne Bay on a beautiful sunny day with a light SSW wind. The 2009 rally contenders were cruising the start line. Ariam, Blue Lady, Sea Dream of Hamble, Spirit of Fairfax and Wylde Oyster were all there. Celestra, Glissando and Ulysses we missed having you with us this year. 4967-02

5 minutes to go, 2 minutes to go. A blast of the start horn from FastnetPhil aboard Blue Lady. Sea Dream of Hamble and Wylde Oyster timed their start to perfection, Ariam and Spirit of Fairfax’s watches were obviously incorrect and were far enough over the line to deserve a ‘penalty 360 degree turn’!

4967-01

Sailing Captain Gill, along with FastnetPhil, aboard the deliberately over-rated and aptly named Blue Lady, were not surprisingly lagging behind – SC Gill was to be seen heading away from the line during the crucial pre-start 2 minutes, pour encourager les autres of course!

The 2009 inaugural Michael Doctors Memorial Lecture
featuring
Tom Cunliffe

clip_image002

The day of the first Michael Doctors lecture was drawing close and the participation numbers were looking really good.

It was clear that the renowned mariner Cunliffe was proving exactly the exciting attraction that the club had hoped for. Current and past members alike together with friends and family of the late Michael Doctors were due to meet for this auspicious occasion… and then…down came the SNOW********. Tons and tons of the white fluffy stuff! Very pretty; but then the reality began to slowly dawn upon me. “This is not good; this definitely doesn’t bode well for keeping up attendances”, and sure enough a few worrying calls and e-mails began to arrive.

AGM 2008 and Laying Up Dinner

The AGM and Laying Up dinner this year crept up on us silently and suddenly I realised that it has been two years since my appointment as your commodore. I also reflected that much has changed since I joined the club, not only in my life but also for many members and for many reasons.

During the AGM that always precedes the Laying Up diner, tribute was paid to Michael Doctors, founder member and former commodore who passed away at the beginning of the year. Read the rest…

Commodore’s Garden Party-2008

It looked as if the July 2008 event would be no less damp and slightly inclement than the 2007 version of the same name, however, surprisingly to some, if not to the forecasters, the afternoon turned bright and intermittently sunny.

Suddenly Alone

cruise-photos-2004-from-cd-full-set-066.JPGSuddenly Alone – explained by Frank Yantin, 10 December 2007

Imagine the scene; you are sailing mid-week down the Solent beyond the Needles and on towards Poole. There is very little other shipping around. You are the novice sailor placed on the helm by the only other person on board, your experienced skipper, who has instructed you on how to keep a steady course while he goes below. Suddenly you hear a thud followed by silence. Read the rest…

AGM and Laying up Dinner Report

The gathering of the tribes of Israel in the sailing fraternity of London on 4th November 2007 was a momentous event in the year’s calendar. Not all of our brethren managed to arrive for the AGM but it was a very efficiently run meeting with our commodore Sandy Kattan being aware that, as it was a Jewish event, the more important aspect of all such events were the starving and due weight had to be given to their stomachs.

The year was reviewed in all its dampness but also its very many highlights. Due regard was paid to the camaraderie and the high levels of enthusiasm that are actively driving the club to ever higher peaks of participation. The business in hand was got through in an atmosphere of enjoyment and the general overview was that the club was functioning very well. Read the rest…
