Well; so summer had been a while arriving, and all the sailing events we had so far arranged had been wet.. really wet.. ! So why was I worrying that the weather for this clearly outdoor event would or could be less than clement??? The fact that it had been raining stair rods for the past few days was a bit of a clue really, however, the forecast did say it could dry up for the evening that day so I thought it wouldn’t harm to take courage from it.
In preparation for dampness Phil had procured a sizable tent affair and we set about constructing it about two hours before kick off.
Thankfully the rain had miraculously stopped by 6.00 pm and the erection of this structure could continue uninterrupted.
About three minutes before guests were due the shelter was finished and HSSC members streamed into the garden, complete with waterproofs and heavy fleeces, and most welcome offerings of party food. I wondered if it would have been better to hold the event in the middle of summer, until Avi gently reminded me it was mid July.
However, my fears were after all unfounded, and although the temperature was less than one might expect from July, the company was truly excellent, libations flowed and food was in plentiful supply. Well this has never been a problem for HSSC in any case!
The event was much enriched by a number of past members joining us for the evening. It was good for me to meet fellow sailors who had been members before my time, and I know how much folk enjoyed catching up with each other and the events of past years and months. Hopefully, we shall continue to enjoy the company of past members at future functions.
I am so very grateful to all my HSSC friends, and particularly to my partner Avi who helped make this event not only a huge success, but who eased my fears and panic and supported us throughout.
Here’s to many more!
